Effects of Microphone

I went to NYU Repertory Orchestra's concert two weeks ago. My friend played Beethoven Piano concerto No.5 "Emperor" with NYU Repertory Orchestra. I had many chances to hear my friend's performance before the concert and her sound is so delicate and grandiouse. The concert was held in Frederick Loewe Theater which is in NYU. I think that resonance of the theater is not sufficient to play orchestra pieces. There were few michrophones and one of the michrophones was placed inside the piano. When my friend started performance I was surprise by her sound. Even though the piano was Steinway & Sons, sound was like electronic piano. I could not understand why the michrophone was inside the piano. I had a doubt whether they did check sound or not. The theater is small and the piano was too close to audiences. It was looked like they did not need to use a michrophone for concert. I know that it was for record. However, I believe that if effects of a michrophone make sound quality worse they should not place a michrophone inside a piano.

Interstudio Showcase

I had a concert which is called Interstudio Showcase in Frederick Loewe Theatre on November 24. I played Beethoven sonata 'Pastoral' Op.28 1st Movement. There were 10 pianist on the concert who are undergraduate or graduate students at NYU. I really enjoyed my colleagues performance especially William Bolcom's piece for two pianos. When I practiced 'Pastoral' sonata for the concert I sometimes recorded my performance and listened to it. The quaility was not good like CD but it really worked for me. It is handy voice recorder, has stereo microphone and is not bigger than cassette recorder. Moreover, I can listen to my performance as soon as I finish recording. A few years ago, When I used cassette voice recorder the sound was not clear and I wasted time for rewinding tape. Technology is developed continuously we can get more convenient and smarter products than old things.

Making CD

Next semester is my last semester in Master Program at NYU. I am preparing application for DMA. All of schools require pre-screening CD audition. If I did not take The Tech Class I struggle to edit my performance. However, I knew the program is called Audacity through The Tech Class. I used Audacity as I learned from my Professor. John Gilbert and it really worked.

Here is how I editted my performance. First, I recorded my performance on Digitar Recorder and played it on Audacity. Second, I editted my performance on Audacity and saved aup file. Finally, I converted aup file to mp3 file and put the mp3 file on a CD.

I tried to upload my mp3 file but I could not find 'Add Music'. Consequently, I used Windows Movie Maker.

Pros and cons of the music thechnology development

The music technology has been developed. We listened to music from LP record twenty years ago. However, now we can hear music by CD which has better sound quality than LP record. I think that there are merits and demerits in the music technology development.
In Korea, a bundle of Alfred Brendel’s 35 CDs is about 200 dollars and each one price is about 5 dollars. Moreover, a bundle of Herbert von Karajan’s 38 symphonies CD is 90 dollars which is for 2 dollars per one CD. As everyone knows, artists study music and spare no effort more than one year for recording one CD. On the contrary, I can download music in 10 seconds on internet that artists recoded and can get CD for five dollars through technology development. Also I can hear and see live performance from DVD or youtube. As a result, Audiences do not come to concert hall frequently compared to past time and the value of live performance is lowered. Now I who am a student like this circumstance since I can get music CD cheap or download music in 10 seconds. However, considering the future, this is not just the desirable situation. I will become an artist who records CD and has live performance in many countries. If someone downloads my music free and easily for 10 seconds on the internet which has my effort and time my heart will feel vain. I can make excellent sound quality CD compared to former time through the music technology development, though. I believe that there are pros and cons of the music technology development.

Welcom to Ah-yeon's blog

This blog is for the tech class. I am sure that this project will help my writing. Actually, I didn't decide subject for my blog but I am thinking about it. I am preparing to apply for DMA degree so I need to make a pre-screening CD for it. I hope that I can make a CD from what I learn from the tech class and can post the process on my blog.
